We started our day at the NAB school for the blind with the primary group as is usual. Since our last visit, the school has taken on one new child. She has been with
the school for only one week, is very young and moving around independently is
a great challenge for her. This has
really put into perspective for us the level of independence that the children
gain from their time with the school from when they first begin; it is easier
to understand the method of tough love given here to prepare the children for a
self dependent life.
We started with a re-cap of up/down, in/out using our hula
hoops from the previous week. They LOVE the hula hoops! After a short recap of this as well as some
of the songs and rhymes, I felt the introduction of a new song was anticipated.
‘One finger one thumb keep moving’ which I adapted to touching the named body
parts as we went through the song because linked with ‘Heads, shoulders, knees
and toes’ we are swiftly and quite easily moving through body parts with
repetition.
We then moved onto the main part of the session we had
prepared, fruit tasting. To our surprise the majority knew the names of all of
the fruit in English. We brought with us mango, watermelon and banana which we
gave to them a piece at a time to feel, smell and taste. Then they had to tell
us the names of the fruit in English. They enjoyed this activity I think mainly
because it was essentially an extra snack time for them! But it was good for
them to connect the smell and taste with the English names.
We finished with them playing some of their own games and
also gifting them the hula hoops as they are such a big hit here!
Unfortunately we did not have time with the older children
today as they did not arrive back from school until 4.30 and then had to eat
and take prayer so we have promised them a dance session next week.
Becca.
