Saturday July 7th

Our session with the primary group was another fun one today. We began with a taste testing exercise but this time to teach sweet, salty, and sour. We brought with us lemons and limes, Cadburys chocolate, crisps (chips), salted peanuts and our favourite sweet treat Nutella.
We first went through the English vocabulary before having each child taste a small amount of each food. As they tasted they had to guess what it was and then also decide if it was sweet, salty, or sour.
For the most part they all did pretty well and you can imagine the delight when it came to the sweet foods.
Some of the staff and other volunteers bring their children on a Saturday and so no surprise we also had three eager toddlers with wide eyes when the chocolate came out!

Our second activity was to make Oobleck. A popular messy play solution made from cornflour and water. It took us a little time to get the consistency right but once we had they absolutely loved this. We had a few children around each tray and they were fascinated with the way in which it takes a solid form when pressure is applied but once released returns to a liquid. It's safe to say the room looked like there had been an Oobleck explosion after we had finished and we had just about as much fun washing off outside in the sun as we did making the mess. Hopefully the cleaner wasn't too upset with us!

Moving on to the older group We had brought enough to repeat the same exercises. The food tasting again went down well and we were able to talk with the older children children a little more about specific flavours and where we find them/when they are used. The chocolate was also the favourite treat here however some of the boys wanted to make sure we knew it wasn't good for our teeth! To which we responded with yes, but a little bit is good for happiness!

We also had another volunteer visit with his guitar in between our sessions and the children loved to hear the strumming and feel the strings which reminded us we should bring our guitar back another time.

After a short break for a snack and prayer we repeated the Oobleck making with the older group and made even more mess! The original plan was to do another dance with them however the floor was in no fit state so we ended the session again with some board games as well as some of the children showing me some computer games. - The computer programs and education they receive here in order to use technology is fantastic. As the world of technology is progressing so is the accessibility for the visually impaired. This will be extremely valuable to them as they make their own way when the time comes for them to leave the school.

All in all another fun filled day!
