Our third meeting with the Kaylehli orphanage was focused on learning some practical English, and maintaining a fun and energetic atmosphere. Although we had yet to receive any complaints from the children, we are starting to understand that a traditional classroom setting here will not be the most effective. The boys spend 6 days a week in classes and especially after a long day in school will not benefit as much from textbook work. We structured the day around learning directions. First we introduced directional vocabulary using flashcards, then proceeded to re-enforce the words through games. We played a “simon says” type game where the children had to follow our verbal commands and move in the direction given. They had fun with this; however their favorite activity of the day was a game we played which involved two teams, each with one individual blind folded, and a goal which that blindfolded child had to reach. The teams could only speak in English and needed to guide their teammate towards the goal in a timely manner. Lots of laughs and learning with this one! As an aside, much to my chagrin, one thing that has become evident is that in India British English is predominantly taught, and therefore, much to Becca’s delight, my Americanisms will have to go by the wayside.
