Back at the Orphanage in Kaylehli for another exciting day, this time focusing on learning body parts in English. Classes 8 and above knew nearly all the words we were introducing, so it was mostly review for them. The younger group picked up the new vocabulary quickly, and we were able to incorporate what they had just learned into several games by the end of the session. We played simon says and mingle mingle, mixing in our new terminology with two games they already knew and enjoyed. The most successful activity of the day however, was a contest to label body parts on an actual body using sticky notes. The children were divided into four teams; one child from each team became the “model” whom they would label. The youngest of the kids were used as the “model” assuring that they were able to participate, as a five year old does not grasp a new language as quickly as a 16 year old. The four teams were given sticky notes with different body parts written in English, and the first team to correctly label their teammate won! They had a blast with this, as not only do they enjoy a bit of competition, covering one of their teammates in sticky notes was good fun.

On several occasions we have played competitive games, and surprisingly for a group of adolescent boys, they are amazingly encouraging of one another. The older children are especially accommodating of the younger ones, helping them if they struggle, and re-assuring them if they are feeling defeated. These boys are truly a big family.
