Sunday June 3rd 2018

As has become our permanent Sunday schedule we spent half a day at Kaylehli and the other half at Seva Bharti.

We first had our morning session with Seva Bharti for which we had prepared a follow on session from our previous visit. We had DIY’d the game Twister using a sheet, paint and some card and a pin for the spinner. Firstly we recapped on our directions, (Left, right, turn around, forwards and backwards) and then progressed on to identifying Left and right hands and feet in preparation for the game.

Allowing the first to be out to then take over the spinner and instruct the directions not only kept them involved in the game but also pushed them to give the directions and colors to each other in English. We found this to be successful and managed to get in a few games before attention spans were lost.

We had also brought with us a soccer ball with the hopes to have some time outside. The rules here are a little more relaxed than at Kaylehli and we were allowed to take them to the park which is a few minutes’ walk away. We were met with a buzz of excitement which was great but we also established rules before we left. (anyone not listening will be brought back etc)

The boys were extremely well behaved, we just had to remind them to tell us if they were going to get a drink of water from the temple (if not they will just go and you’ll be panicking you’ve lost one). We had a game of soccer, a relay race, a relaxing break in the shade and then headed back. On the way we stopped at the shop and got everyone a small carton of cold juice as it was getting towards midday heat and also just for a treat (small rewards for good behavior can go a long way).

We sang one song with them to finish, which they enjoyed, but this group just aren’t as interested in music as they are games.

Our afternoon session with Kaylehli was similar however we hadn’t made their twister sheet, instead we allowed them to paint the colored circles themselves encouraging different patterns. Again we recapped directions and introduced left and right hands and feet. Making the twister sheet was actually more successful than the game itself! Although they enjoyed it they lost interest after only a game or two. Maybe this was due to them being such a large group with wider age gaps, however we learnt from this that they love to paint and this could be something we do more of.

We also did relay races in two teams across the yard. Jumping, hopping, running backwards, in pairs etc. (Make sure to mix up the teams by age and ability to make it fair as they are quite competitive) However no soccer game here as there isn’t the space and the yard is also next to the main road so I can guarantee we would have lost the ball to a truck if it had gone over.

We played Wink Murder, as this has become a favorite here, before once again finishing with Songs. The boys here really love music and are keen to give us songs to learn (a LOT of Justin Bieber) and then sing along with the parts they know. They are all incredibly sweet and never want us to leave always asking ‘tomorrow tomorrow?’ however for now we are doing 2/3 sessions a week in hope they can be full of activities and purposeful as opposed to going every day just to be there and not have much of an impact.

Overall a productive and satisfying Sunday funday!

Becca
