Cricket Cricket Cricket!

Indians love cricket, and the group at the NAB school for the blind is no exception.  The children had promised us from the previous week that they would show us how they played cricket, so today we took a stroll down to the park.

Regardless of the blistering heat, the children were ecstatic to be spending the day outside, and show us how they play one of their favorite games.  The group is lucky enough to be coached not only by a former student of the school, but a gentleman who was also invited to represent India on its National Blind Cricket Team!

Although very similar to standard cricket, there are a few adjustments made in Blind Cricket.  Players are divided into the categories B1, B2, and B3.  The categories depend on the level of slight each player has with B1 players being completely blind.  Each team is to have a set amount of each category.  Furthermore, the ball is slightly larger and contains bearings inside which created noise as it moves.  This allows those players with no sight to hear the ball as it moves.  Verbal signals, which differ from standard cricket, are also used by the players and umpires and are essential to the game.

It was good fun learning about blind cricket and spending the day outside with the kids.  We shared some snacks and beverages in the shade before heading back to the school to end out session.
